Respite Program

About Shining Light Respite

What is Shining Light Respite?

Shining Light Respite is a FREE program that offers one-on-one social companionship, meaningful activities, and active engagement for individuals living with dementia in Sarasota and surrounding areas while providing a 4 hour rest time for their devoted caretakers.

What happens During Respite?

Currently SLC has trained volunteers that lead the 4-hour long program which includes: crafts, games, music, gentle exercise, lunch, and more in an effort to give caregivers a chance to have 4 hours of rest and rejuvenate.

The program has a volunteer "buddy" that each participant will be paired with for one-on-one companionship.

When Is Shining Light Respite?

The program is a once a month, 4 hour program that takes place every 2nd Wednesday of the month from 10:30am - 2:30pm at Shining Light Church.

About Our Program Leader

Cheryl O'Brian began the journey of founding and growing a respite program in 2020, born out of her own struggle to find support for her husband, John. What started as just an idea has since blossomed into a thriving ministry—operating in two churches, mobilizing dozens of volunteers, and providing care and encouragement to countless caregivers each month.
